On Monday CMS proposed new bundled payment models for cardiac conditions, along with an extension to the bundled payment model for hip procedures.
According to the press release from CMS, “These models would reward hospitals that work together with physicians and other providers to avoid complications, prevent hospital readmissions, and speed recovery.”
The proposed bundles are planned to begin on July 1, 2017. Hospitals from 98 randomly-selected metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) will participate, with the exclusion of rural counties.
There have been promising results in several earlier bundled payment experiments for cardiovascular care dating back to the 1990s. The goal, as in other bundled payment models, is to improve care while reducing costs. This announcement is another sign of the trend toward value-based payment systems and bundled payment in particular.CMS is currently accepting feedback on this new proposal.
Archway Health is already studying the details of the proposed rule and we plan to publish a more detailed commentary soon.
